I can’t go a whole month without a visit to Revels so booked a day off work to make the pilgrimage down to the Dorset mecca. After meeting Parker ‘The Pole’ for breakfast we were soon pulling into the car park and you need to get there early nowadays as the Tuesday opens are becoming very popular and today was no exception with 26 anglers fishing. I believe the record attendance is 28 and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before it tops 30 and Jason will need to extend his car park!
Draw time soon arrived and after getting some brilliant silvers pegs on my first four visits, the next two left a lot to be desired when Dean pulled out 9 and 14 for me, so I was hoping for better things today. With Main, Dead Tree, Middle and Canal lakes being used today, there were loads of lovely silvers pegs I fancied so when my name was called and Dean stuck his hand in the bucket I was full of hope, until he revealed a ball with 11 on it! It’s the end peg on the arm of Main which is great for carp and I was gutted. The only slight hope I had was that Albie had framed off it last week with 10lb 14oz which included some decent skimmers and there seem to be a few around pegs 9, 10 and 11 at the moment.
It was going to be another scorching hot day and as I got my kit to the peg, there were already loads of carp cruising about and I had a horrible feeling that this could be carnage! I set rigs up for the top kit down the edge, four sections out and 11.5 metres with the plan to feed quite a few lines and keep moving to avoid the rig trashers.
On the whistle I fed the longer lines with little nuggets of groundbait and a few pinkies before starting down the edge to the left. First put in I had a chunky perch then next chuck hooked a carp that tore off, snapping the hooklength in the process which was rather worrying! I did start getting a few small perch and roach before I foulhooked a carp that thankfully came off, I decided that if I hooked another, I’d switch lines. Laying the rig in, the float settled before sliding under and I struck into solid resistance as yet another carp headed out into the lake but then it stopped and a big 2lb+ skimmer rose to the surface which I gratefully netted – that’ll do!
I carried on catching the odd little fish and got to 16 fish for 3lb after thirty minutes, a brilliant start but it died a death and I probably stayed on it too long hoping for another skimmer. Moving out to the top four lines, I began getting a few roach and also added another skimbob, this one around 12oz but once again I was a bit slow in switching lines after bites tailed off.
11.5 metres was next and it was a bite a chuck from roach and I was left wishing I’d done it sooner, I had another nice skimmer and a smaller sample but also pulled out of one. I was on 55 fish after three hours but during the remaining 2.5 hours I spent on the longer lines I had another 64 fish but also bumped loads and hooked quite a few carp. At the final whistle, it had been another lovely day and hopefully I had double figures but with some great silvers anglers on good pegs, I wasn’t sure it’d be enough to frame.
I took some of my kit back to the car and met the scales on their way down from Dead Tree, the top silvers weight up there was Steve Nadin with 9lb 3oz, on Canal ‘The Pole’ had a nice day catching 8lb 2oz and John Bass on 67 weighed a brilliant 15lb 7oz. Down onto Main and Rich Butler on peg 1 went into the overall lead with 72lb 13oz before Alex Nadin on 6 came close with 66lb 13oz and young Austin next door did well with 55lb 12oz. Derek P on 8 had 46lb and then it was me and my fish went 11lb 10oz which put me second so far but there were still some good pegs on Main to weigh and Andy Miller and Bob Crispe on Middle. Rich Butler had the top weight on the day with 72lb 13oz*
Alex Nadin was third with 66lb 13oz*
Young Austin on peg 7 did well with 55lb 12oz*
I was joint third in the silvers with 11lb 10oz*
Back at the car park and Andy M had weighed 11lb 14oz for second in the silvers and Bob also had 11lb 10oz so we ended up joint third picking up £15 each and it had been really close with just 4oz between the three of us.
