At Todber on Saturday I went into the bucket of doom with three tickets left, I grabbed one but didn’t open it. As people started writing their names on the sheet, nobody was admitting to 71 although Andy A was on his usual flier (70). I finally summoned the courage to have a look and I had finally drawn a peg on the epicentre! Roy ‘The Bomb’ was next door on 72 so I went back to the shop to see if they sold ear plugs but sadly Colmic, Guru or Preston don’t make them (definitely a gap in the market there as I reckon they’d sell loads). Adrian Dew was also in close proximity on 69 and had stepped up his hat game for today!
After really enjoying fishing the waggler and corn last week, I was hoping for more of the same today and I also set up a rig for down the edge plus another for 13 metres. On the whistle I fed the pole lines before starting on the wiggler but despite giving it an hour, I only had three skimmers and even at this early stage I knew I’d got it wrong as Andy was landing a procession of big skimmers along with a 3lb tench.
Switching to the pole I’ve only managed a decent roach and a skimmer while Andy continued to bag right up, Ade and Glynn were also catching well and Roy was getting odd fish while I continued to struggle and was getting a battering along with a severe case of neck ache!
Back on the waggler I could get occasional skimmers but Andy was getting one a bung and on for a big weight, in the last half an hour I had four small skimmers but my final rather embarrassing total of 16 skimmers, 1 decent roach and a few bits for around 8lb wasn’t worth troubling the scales and as the famous saying goes, ‘If you don’t weigh in, you’ve caught f*** all!’.
As the scales began making their way up the lake, Nick had done well on 62 with 16lb, Alan G weighed 5lb, Jack Copp on 66 had 14lb 8oz, Steve O weighed 6lb and Tim M had 20lb. Adrian weighed 26lb 8oz and then Andy had a stunning net of big skimmers plus several tench for a runaway victory with a massive 61lb, the numpty on peg 71 chucked back, Roy weighed 17lb, Glynn had a nice net of fish to go into third spot with 25lb 8oz, Amanda weighed 8lb and Terry L on 75 had 3lb 8oz. So a proper spanking off the next peg and for good measure I was also chip shopped as well, Andy along with Rod Dunford certainly seem to have Ash sorted, yes they draw some good pegs but when they do they make them count (unlike me on one of the best pegs and I was never at the races today, in fact I think my horse is still running!). I obviously got it really wrong today, after catching well on corn last week and not being far away from framing, I rather put all my eggs in one basket today whereas both Andy and Glynn had fished worm which I seem to struggle with.
