For Foxy’s latest match at Acorn I employed the hanging back technique at the draw and pulled out number 2 on the island which is one of the best silvers pegs, so well happy with that!
The worst peg photo ever!
I decided to tweak my normal approach slightly today (so definitely no cutting and pasting involved!), the first change was I hadn’t brought any groundbait with me and it would be maggots all the way, secondly I set up a little rig to fish a top kit just in front of my nets. I’ve never done it before as I’ve always thought carp would be a problem but people have been catching some big skimmers and tench so it had to be worth a go.
On the whistle, I potted in some maggots on the top four and 11.5 metre lines before starting short, I missed a couple of indications before catching a 2lb skimmer, another followed next chuck and then I began getting some decent ide. It was brilliant fishing and I had two more big skimmers and a lovely 2.5lb tench. With an hour gone I probably had 20lb already but bites were beginning to slow up and I probably stayed on this line too long although I did have nice perch of a pound.
The top four line was next and I had a nice run of ide although my catch rate had slowed compared to that frantic first sixty minutes. With two hours left, I tried the shallow rig over the same line and the float buried first put in with a good ide and I caught well until the end of the match to finish up with 104 fish. The scales soon arrived and Pedro next door on peg 1 had over 120lb, my three nets of silvers went 16lb, 27lb and 20lb for a total of 64lb 3oz, a cracking day. Mark W on my left weighed 205lb 13oz before Simon Stacey had 245lb 9oz and Tony P fished for silvers on peg 5 weighing 31lb 6oz.
Back at the results and Kev Perry on peg 33 had the top weight on the day with a massive 259lb 3oz, with Simon second and John Mills took third spot with 218lb 14oz. There were a string a big weights with the top six all weighing more than 200lb! I picked up £50 for winning the silvers and there had been some other great silvers weights, Glenn on 29 had 47lb and Jo weighed 41lb 8oz.
