Acorn Fishery – Open – 16th December 2023

Saturday we were back at Acorn for the last of Chris Fox’s matches this year, the pond was flat calm and I said to Nick I thought 15lb would be a good silvers weight today. Chris announced the draw and I really fancied 38 or 40 but 33 attached itself to my hand, although it’s not been very good lately, being a bridge peg I still quite fancied it. Nick got peg 4 on the island which hasn’t been great for silvers either.

Chad on peg 31 was my right hand neighbour and with Walshy on 34, an entertaining day would be on the cards! I set up a couple of rigs for four lines, two by the bridge and two in open water. The side tray contained red and white maggots, disco pinkies plus some Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark groundbait.

On the whistle, I fed all four lines with a little nugget of gb and a few pinkies before starting to the right at 10 metres. As expected it was a slow start and after 15 mins without an indication, I had a look on my longer line by the bridge. A positive bite resulted in a little 1.5lb carp, I did miss a couple of indications before hooking another fish which didn’t feel very carp-like but I’ll never know as it came off!

The top two plus two line by the bridge was next but no bites and it was same on my other short  swim straight out. It looked like it was fishing really hard, Chad hadn’t had a bite yet and Walshy only had one small carp although Martin R on 36 was getting a few. I kept rotating round my lines and the next bite was a decent skimmer on double pinkie from the 10 metre bridge swim before I bumped one on the shorter line.

My second skimmer came from the longer swim in open water to the right and then it was time to move again as I couldn’t seem to catch more than one fish from a line. With around half the match gone, Chad still hadn’t had a bite but odd carp were moving by the island so he set up another rig and went right across fishing maggot shallow and began catching really well.

I missed a bite on the short line and then as I lifted the rig up I foulhooked a decent skimmer which stayed on and was a welcome bonus! That was basically it until the last 15 mins when out the blue I had my second small carp from the right hand 10 metre line, I swapped lines again but with a couple of minutes to go went back to that line and the float buried and I thought it was another little carp but then a lovely 2lb perch popped up and then it was the all out.

The scales arrived and Chad weighed an excellent 40lb 6oz, my two carp went 4lb 2oz and the silvers (three skimmers and a perch) weighed 6lb 4oz. Walshy had several small carp for 8lb 1oz and then Martin weighed 48lb 5oz which included 10lb 11oz of silvers.

Back at the results and Mark Broomsgrove had the top weight with 53lb 12oz (including 10lb 2oz of silvers) from peg 6 followed by Graham Smith with 48lb 11oz and Martin won the silvers. Section wins went to Brian Slipper, Chad and Rob Wiltshire. It was really close on the silvers front, after Martin and Mark, Nick had 9lb 4oz of silvers and Kev Perry weighed 9lb 3oz so just one fish in it.

Nick and me both stuck £2 in the pot (for today and tomorrow) as the Nugget-O-Meter continues to rise steadily and is now on £25.
