Summerhayes – Open – 21st January 2024

I was looking forward to fishing Sellicks on Sunday although once again another named storm was due to let us have it with both barrels later on. The day started off nicely though with breakfast at the bowling club (thanks Charlotte) before we headed to Bridgwater. With 22 anglers fishing today it would be rather cosy and the silvers match had fished hard the day before with just 7lb winning and most people not catching for three hours!

Pete got the draw underway starting with the golden peg which today was number 4, a decent area as peg 2 had won the previous day. When it was my turn, I pulled out 11 at the top end  which hopefully would be a bit more sheltered although it had blanked yesterday! I was in a Tiverton sandwich with Heardy on 10 and Hollywood the other side of me. Nick was over on 14 but would need ear plugs today as he had Craig ‘calm down, calm down’ Lyttle on his left

Hollywood was next door

I set up my usual 0.2 gram Bobbies to fish two lines at 10 metres, straight out and angled to the left in open water, a top two line and then across at 13 metres. The side tray for today contained red maggots, disco pinkies and some Bait-Tech Special G F1 Dark.

On the whistle I fed a throwaway top kit line to my left and the two 10 metre lines with a nugget and a few pinkies and also fired a few maggots over to the island. The short line was a waste of time which wasn’t unexpected and I also thought it would take a while to catch on the longer lines.

A couple of early carp were caught further down the lake and although not my intended quarry, hopefully it meant a few fish were prepared to feed. Approaching an hour in, I hadn’t had so much as a flicker on the float and was starting to fear the worst. Hollywood then struck into a fish by the island and landed a decent skimmer, I was just about to have a look across (a lot earlier than I would have liked) when the float disappeared from view and I had a nice roach.

I gave it another ten minutes but when Ian added a second skimmer, I couldn’t resist and went across to the point of the island. Laying the rig in, it settled and went straight under, only for me to bump it! I was getting the odd indication and had a few decent roach but no skimmers as yet, apparently Toby B on the golden peg was catching well and Zooner on 5 was getting a few as well.

As we reached the halfway point, Heardy still hadn’t caught, Hollywood had those two skimmers, Roy Hughes on 13 was getting the odd roach and also had two skimmers and Nick just had one roach so for the second day running it was looking like we were at the wrong end of the lake. Just to add to the enjoyment, the wind was getting worse and fishing long was now nearly nigh on impossible! McKenzie over on peg 21 decided to pack some of his gear away only for the wind to catch his keepnets and drag his seatbox into the pond! Thankfully the anglers either side managed to help him and I don’t think too much damage was done to his kit.

With about two hours to go, Adie on peg 9 who’d had a carp and roach decided enough was enough and began packing up, with nobody at our end catching, for the first time in longer than I care to remember, I also waved the white flag! It wasn’t only us either as several others (including Nick) called it a day. I chucked back my six roach for 1.5lb and paid Zooner a pound, he had seven skimmers and a couple of roach while Toby was looking at a bumper payday as he’d caught around a dozen skimmers.

It absolutely lashed down as I was driving home so I think I made the right decision! Pete sent me the results and Martin Addicott continued his excellent form with 30lb 2oz for another win and Toby won the silvers and picked up a nice bonus with 8lb 2oz.

1 – Martin Addicott (Summerhayes) – 30lb 2oz
2 – Craig Lyttle (Summerhayes) – 17lb 14oz
3 – Mark Vigar (Summerhayes) – 10lb 9oz

Silvers
1 – Toby Burrell (Team Army) – 8lb 2oz
2 – Alex Kerr (Summerhayes) – 4lb 11oz
3 – Jess Jordan (Summerhayes) – 3lb 6oz
