Summerhayes – Open – 21st April 2025

Bank Holiday Monday and for part four of my angling pentalogy I was back at Summerhayes for another match on Longs. 22 fishing so a great turn out and when it was my turn to draw I pulled out 38 which I had mixed feelings about. It’s probably the narrowest peg on the lake and has been really good for carp recently.

I set up the usual little light rigs (0.1 and 0.2 grams) to fish three lines at top four, 10 metres down the middle to my right and two areas across to the island at 11.5 metres. On the whistle I fed all my swims before starting short and first put in, the float went straight under and a chunky little ide got me up and running. Next chuck, I laid the rig in and picked up the catty to feed across when I felt the pole get pulled round and elastic streamed out as a carp nailed the bait on the drop!

A six pounder gave me the runaround before I landed it, thankfully it didn’t mess the short lines up too much and I had a lovely first hour catching ide and some decent roach plus a 10oz crucian. The second hour was similar with another 14 fish including two little tench and a skimmer around 8oz. Adie on 34 was catching decent silvers while Bill next door was fishing short and catching some big skimmers.

Swapping between my three short lines I was still getting regular indications and it was really nice fishing although I did pull out of what felt like a decent skimmer. With around two hours to go, bites began to slow so I had my first look across and started catching some nice roach although I was hooking the odd carp as well. Adie had switched from fishing for silvers to carp and was bagging up down the edge.

In amongst the roach I had another little tench but also pulled out of another decent skimmer and just before the all out hooked a slightly better fish that turned out to be a 6-8oz chublet which was a nice finish to a really enjoyable match. The scales soon arrived and my carp went 21lb 4oz and then my 75 silvers weighed 13lb 8oz but I wasn’t sure it would be enough as Adie was admitting to double figures and apparently Glynn and Mark Leahy had both caught some decent skimmers.
