After drawing 63 last Saturday, I was hoping there wouldn’t be a repeat performance this week and I could drive to my more familiar surroundings in the middle of the lake! Only eight of us fishing this week which thankfully meant 63 wasn’t in, the draw was announced and when there were just two tickets left, Mr Dew and I selected one each, Ade revealed number 70 which is bang on, I opened mine to see 62 staring back at me! Although it’s been a bit hit and miss in recent matches, it’s one I’ve never drawn and I quite fancied it.
The usual rigs were assembled fish a top kit down the edge, five sections straight out and towards the bush plus a 13 metre line. I started down the edge and it was a bite a chuck from roach, 2-3oz skimbobs and the odd chunky perch. After an hour I had around 4-5lb but Lee Jan on 64 was starting to get some decent skimmers fishing meat on his long pole line so I tried by the bush which only resulted in a couple of small skimmers. The short corn and micros line was next but it took ages to get a bite only for me to miss it and it was a similar story at 13 metres.
I could still catch small fish down the edge and it did cross my mind just to fish maggot and caster and see what weight I could do as 16lb framed last week and I felt 20-25lb was possible. Venue Pro Guy came for his usual lunch time wander and when he reported Andy A on 72 was admitting to 25lb while Pete Neate was absolutely bagging on the waggler and corn and had 45lb already, I was wasting my time and needed to catch big skimmers.
For the remainder of the match I’ve fished corn at 13 metres and was catching odd 8-10oz skimmers but rather limped home to finish up with 68 fish for 16lb, Lee had a nice net of skimmers for 31lb 4oz, Dave B didn’t weigh on 66 and then Pete Neate on peg 68 had a fantastic net of fish weighing 62lb 9oz.
