Summerhayes – Open – 25th August 2025

Bank Holiday Monday saw me headed to Summerhayes for the match on Longs which has been fishing really well for silvers. Only ten of us today and I drew peg 30 which was right where I wanted to be although I had Spud and Adie either side of me and they would both be fishing for silvers as well.

As per usual I started short on a top kit and had a few small fish but it wasn’t great so I moved out to four sections and hooked a big leaper that just kept going and I couldn’t do anything with it which made me suspect it was foul hooked and so it proved when it came off and there was a scale on the hook. So not a great start unlike Adie who was already into his stride shipping back a decent fish every chuck.

I was getting odd 4-6oz skimmers and roach but already a long way behind Adie and Spud who were both catching really well. To be honest, I spent way too long trying to make the shorter lines work and failing miserably while my neighbours continued to give me a battering. I’d fed a 11.5 metre swim angled to the left with groundbait and with a couple of hours to go decided to have a look but was expecting to get carped out as there were loads cruising about.

First put in on the longer line, the float buried with a decent 8oz skimmer the result, the same thing happened next chuck and I started catching really well. I began loose feeding maggots over the top and also started pinging some on a new line at 11.5 metres straight out. Swapping between the two swims, I had a brilliant spell catching skimmers including a couple of better ones along with a nice tench and by my reckoning, I was closing the gap on Adie and there now wasn’t much between me and Spud.

Going into the last hour, I started hooking more carp so tried the top kit line again and had a couple of 6-8oz skimbobs but really needed those bigger ones. Adie was still catching well while Spud landed several better skimmers and I thought I’d been right royally chip shopped! I ended up with 100 fish and it had been another busy days fishing but I was sure not going long earlier was going to cost me.

The first peg to weigh was Rob B on 10 and he had 7lb 14oz of silvers, Allan H went into the overall lead with 86lb of carp and then Mark Leahy on 14 had flown out of the blocks catching big skimmers before getting carped out and ended up with 71lb (including 16lb 13oz of silvers).

Dan T on 17 weighed 15lb 1oz of skimmers and 30lb 7oz of carp, Zooner also had a nice net of silvers for 12lb 7oz before we got to Adie who once again proved he’s got it well sorted with a fantastic 28lb 5oz, my fish went 24lb 7oz which was a bit more than I thought but I’m still falling a few fish short of Mr Bishop who had another squid off me. It was also closer than I realised between Spud and me when he weighed 26lb 10oz to go into second place.
