After struggling for 11oz in my last outing, I was back at Summerhayes on Sunday for another match on Longs and praying for a decent silvers peg. Nick and me were the last two names on the list and when I was called up, the two balls left were 13 (one of my favourite silvers pegs) and 37 which is brilliant for carp, no prizes for guessing which one I pulled out!

I’d still have a go for silvers but managed to scrounge some bread off McKenzie who was next door on 36 (cheers mate!) so I could do a bit of dobbing for the carp as well. On the whistle I fed a little nugget of groundbait and a few pinkies at 10 metres in front and by the aerator to my right before starting across to the point of the island with bread. It took a little while to get a bite which was from a decent roach rather than a carp and when I had two more quite quickly I went over with a little light rig thinking I’d catch a roach a bung but only managed a couple of small fish.
I had an ide by the aerator and two more small fish from the other 10 metre line but with Dan T on 3 and Nick over on 13 getting the odd decent skimmer I was going nowhere fast. As far as I could tell, there weren’t many carp being caught apart from Steve Collins down on 32 (which was also the golden peg) as he was looking good to finance yet another exotic holiday!
Back across with bread I couldn’t get a bite so tried up the edge to my right and first put in the float settled before going straight under! After a short scrap I safely netted a carp, next chuck I had another and then a third, it was solid! I hooked nine (landing seven of them) in quick succession but before I could get any grand ideas about winning the match and saving the golden ball, I couldn’t get a bite again.
It wasn’t just me though as McKenzie had landed a couple of carp but was now struggling and Steve had also stopped catching although he was still several fish ahead of me. Despite trying maggot and pinkie down the edge I never had another fish until just before the end when I had my eighth carp on bread. I was first to be weighed and my carp went 32lb 4oz before my modest haul of silvers added 1lb 3oz, Kedgie on 39 struggled for 1lb 15oz of silvers and then Dan ‘Making It Happen’ Taggart had some decent skimmers for 4lb 4oz.

Another AI generated catch shot of me with some carp!

Dan T had some decent skimmers for 4lb 4oz
The next couple of pegs didn’t weigh (thanks for your attendance Craig!), Nick P had 5lb 9oz to go into the silvers lead and Alex hadn’t had a bite on 15 for the second match on the trot. Bruce Hunt on 17 had 4lb of silvers and then pegs 19 round to 29 didn’t trouble the scales. Paul P on 30 had 3lb 4oz of silvers and then Steve C weighed 49lb 8oz and I’m sure I saw him checking out flights on his phone! Roy H had 8lb 10oz on 33, Rob weighed 1lb 11oz of silvers and then McKenzie went into third place with 19lb 1oz.

Nick won the silvers with 5lb 9oz on peg 13

Steve C’s holiday fund received a nice boost when he weighed 49lb 8oz

McKenzie was in the frame again with 19lb 1oz
1 – Steve Collins (Summerhayes) – 49lb 8oz
2 – Jamie Rich (Bait-Tech/Colmic) – 33lb 7oz
3 – McKenzie Wickham (Middy) – 19lb 1oz
Silvers
1 – Nick Payne (Ilminster) – 5lb 9oz
2 – Dan Taggart (Summerhayes) – 4lb 4oz
3 – Bruce Hunt (Tiverton) – 4lb

I picked up £45 for second and although fishing for carp isn’t really my thing, I do quite enjoy a bit of dobbing in the winter!
Craig L kindly donated a squid to the Nugget-O-Meter which now stands at £122.
