Summerhayes – Open – 11th January 2026

Although we had a frosty start yesterday it actually turned out to be rather nice, the forecast for Sunday was a much more miserable prospect with strong winds and rain predicted all day! A dozen hardy anglers in attendance and Pete said we could have another rover so people could try and pick swims to afford some respite from the elements. For once I actually managed to pull out a nice early choice with ball number 2. Chris M went for 34 on Longs and then I chose 4 on Sellicks, it wouldn’t be particularly sheltered but after seeing Bob’s lovely net of fish on 3 yesterday, I really fancied trying to catch some of those roach.

Looking up the lake from the car park with Parker ‘The Pole’ on peg 2

My neighbours for the day were Parker ‘The Pole’ on 2 with Big Bad Bob on my left while Nick went for 16 up the top end on the opposite bank. I set up a little light rig and a heavier 4×14 float for 11.5 metres plus a 0.2 gram Bobbie for across although I wasn’t sure I’d actually be able to fish long today.

We got underway and I fed one line down the middle with groundbait and another with just some pinkies before pinging a few maggots across. I started over the gb with the lighter rig but it just wasn’t right and the wind and tow was already a nightmare. Stevie P got off the mark quite quickly with a little tench but it took a while to get my first bite and I had a couple of roach but was soon switching to the heavier rig which was miles better.

I also started pinging maggots over the left hand line and began catching some corking roach with several around 10-12oz. The weather was awful but the fishing was lovely, after three hours bites began to slow up so I decided to see if I could control the pole any sense at 14.5 metres. The float settled before going straight under and I had four decent roach in as many chucks. I continued getting odd fish but the wind was hideous and I was really struggling to keep the rig still so I had another look on the shorter lines which resulted in two more roach but bites there were now few and far between.

I was dying to try across again as it felt like there were a lot of fish there and with 15 mins to go, the wind abated slightly so I shipped back out to 14.5 metres and had two lovely roach although I also pulled out of a better fish. At the all out I finished up with 32 roach plus a small skimmer and had really enjoyed that (apart from the bloody weather!).

The scales started over on Longs where Roy on 11 had 3lb 13oz of silvers, Glynn and Bill didn’t weigh and Chris M had 6lb 8oz of silvers. Then it was on to Sellicks, Steve P weighed 2lb 12oz, my fish went 11lb 5oz, Bob had 2lb 7oz, Adie on peg 8 had 20lb 1oz which included 8lb 1oz of silvers and then Oscar weighed 33lb 14oz on peg 11 to go into the lead. Nick had 6lb 5oz of silvers, Alex on 20 weighed 5lb 11oz and Rog had struggled on 24 for 8oz.

Oscar had the top weight on the day, I picked up £48 for winning the silvers while Adie was the runner up in both which meant Chris M finished second in the silvers by default.

Oscar very kindly gave me a nugget to help the charity total up to £155.
