For the first match of the weekend it was up to Acorn for Foxy’s latest match and I drew 16 over on the far side, a decent area for silvers. I got the usual rigs out for top four, 10 metres and across which was where I started, losing a foulhooked carp first chuck wasn’t ideal, the next fish was a carassio and it wasn’t really happening. Down the middle I finally opened my silvers account with an ide and began getting regular bites, adding another eight ide and a tench in the next thirty minutes.
The second hour was pretty good with 21 fish although bites began to slow up at 10 metres, dropping in on the short line I had a nice run of fish including a tench and a big skimmer. With two hours to go, bites were hard to come by and swapping lines only resulted in odd fish so going into the last sixty minutes, I tried fishing shallow down the middle and the float buried first put in as an ide grabbed the bait. It was a bite a chuck and I couldn’t get the rig in fast enough, the ide were a good stamp as well and even better, only one small-ish carp gate crashed the party.
At the all out, I had 86 fish on the clicker and thought I’d done okay but was left wishing I’d tried fishing shallow earlier. John Mills of Average Angler fame walked up and said he’d caught a similar number of ide to me but had several more skimmers so I knew he’d probably beaten me. When the scales arrived, my two nets of silvers went 51lb 5oz which is a brilliant days fishing but I knew it wouldn’t be enough and so it proved as John won the silvers with a fantastic 62lb 15oz and Clayton Hudson over on 40 also did really well with 56lb+.
Overall the island pegs dominated with Gareth B taking the win with a massive 194lb while Paul Faiers collected hos post on the way to 193lb and second place.
