Summerhayes – Open – 25th May 2026

Bank Holiday Monday and it was back to Summerhayes with the forecast for another blisteringly hot day, there were only a few of us so it would be a rover with most people hoping for a low number so they could pick pegs in the shade! Draw time arrived and I got choice 4 but the pegs on the shady bottom bank had all gone so I went for 13 which is one of my favourites.

Most anglers wear a hat of some description but Harry takes the prize for the most striking and stylish headwear I’ve seen in a match yet!

Along with having to contend with the heat, there was also loads of that white fluff that’s always a pain at this time of year. On the short line it was a slow start and took 15 minutes to get my first fish which was a chunky perch. I began catching odd fish but it was far from prolific and already it was getting stupidly hot so I was glad I’d split my bait with half in a cool bag filled with ice blocks (and plenty of cold drinks).

With two hours on the clock, I had my first look at 11.5 metres and started skimmers and roach but the heat was already taking its toll on my bait (and me!). McKenzie on my left was catching silvers and Glynn was beginning to hook quite a few carp while Nick opposite on the track was netting some decent skimmers.

They say fishing is supposed to be relaxing but with the heat, dying bait and white fluff along with hooking quite a few carp and losing my elastic I was feeling anything but chilled out! Going into the last hour I went to 13 metres and caught a couple more skimmers and just before the end had a nice tench of a pound to finish with 42 fish.

The weigh in began with Harry ‘The Hat’ who had 27lb, then Nick had a brilliant 17lb 7oz of silvers, Mark Leahy had 13lb of silvers and some carp before Glynn went into the overall lead with 35lb 4oz (including 15lb of silvers), McKenzie had 9lb 6oz and then it was me. Pulling my net out it was going to be really close and the scales settled on 18lb  – phew!

Glynn had the top weight on the day with 35lb 4oz (and I don’t think the heat affected him at all!)

I had 18lb of skimmers, tench, perch and roach to win the silvers

1 – Glynn Wickham (Summerhayes) – 35lb 4oz

Silvers
1 – Jamie Rich (Bait-Tech/Colmic) – 18lb

I picked up £36 for winning the silvers but that was too hot for me today (and my maggots!).
