Acorn Fishery – Open – 4th April 2026

Day two (of five) was back up the M5 to Acorn and if the weather forecast was to be believed we were in for yet another battering by the wind. Fully subscribed with 28 anglers booked in, Foxy announced the draw and as per usual he chose somebody to pull a peg for him and for once they got a very good one in the shape of number 5. Tony Rixon was also on the island, peg 2 and would be fishing for silvers. I was over on 15 on the back straight, which can be a great peg for carp or silvers.

As predicted, the wind was howling down the lake but I decided to try shipping across to the far bank to see if I could control the pole and it wasn’t actually too bad. I also set up rigs for down the middle at 10 metres and top four but by the time the whistle went, the wind had strengthened, I went across to the island and nearly got swivelled round on my box so that was the end of that!

You can see from the photo that the wind was whipping down the straight

10 metres was more manageable but the first indication resulted in a foulhooked carp tearing off and I wasn’t off to the best of starts. Next chuck I had a 4oz skimbob followed by an ide and began catching really well, after an hour I had 20 fish (18 ide and 2 skimmers) for around 9-10lb. The second sixty minutes was even better with 27 ide and going into hour three I started my second silvers net when I reached 50 fish.

A look short and the ide kept coming along with a decent skimmer and a nice tench around 1.5lb, with an hour to go, I put a third silvers net in (the limit is a strict 40lb but I start a new one when I think I’ve got 25lb to be safe). I continued catching the odd ide along with a couple more tench and skimmers and was playing another tench as the whistle went to finish up with 103 fish. At an average of 8oz apiece that would give around 52lb and I hoped with the tench and skimmers it would be a bit more. Apart from the wind, it had been a brilliant days fishing, I’d only hooked one carp although I did land two non-counting carassio.

As the scales got round to our side, a quick look at the board showed Foxy was winning with 121lb and Tony was leading the silvers with a brilliant 60lb and I had a horrible feeling I was going to fall just short of that. To stand any chance I needed that last net to be 10lb+ and thankfully it went 11lb something, the middle net was just over 25lb and my first net weighed 28lb odd for a total of 65lb 5oz.

Back at the results, and Chris had won with Mark and Jo in second and third with 100lb+ bags and then as always there were several really close weights between 87lb and 90lb, I won the silvers and picked up £50.
