I was contacted recently by a very nice chap called Chris from Gerry’s Fishing (a long-standing tackle shop based in Morecambe) who said he really enjoys the blog (which is always nice to hear) and that they would like to collaborate with me by sending me a piece of kit to review. A few days later a cardboard rod tube arrived (always exciting) containing a Nytro Marvelist 10ft Carp Rod.

A lovely looking rod, this is what the Nytro website says about the Marvelist range;
• Designed in close cooperation with feeder legend and former World Champion, Tommy Pickering
• Progressive through action leaving sufficient reserves in the spine
• High-modulus Diamond Carbon-curve blanks combining 30T and 40T
• Carbon wrap on handle section
• Oversized hook keeper
• All feeder rods feature three dedicated carbon quiver tips
• Handles combine flat-grip cork and duplon
• Half-mat black finish with epoxy varnished guide wrapping
• Screw-down reel seat
• Three different ranges (Light Carp, Carp and Allrounder), each in three different lengths for most commercial and allround feeder fishing conditions
• Supplied in a rod bag
• Butt cap features epoxy Nytro logo
With a RRP around £109.95, the 10ft rod is two piece and comes supplied with three tips (1oz, 1.5oz and 2oz)

Quality components throughout including a screw-down reel seat and a comfortable handle combining cork and duplon.

A lovely looking rod although as it’s designed more for match sized carp fishing which is not something I do much of at all, I did think it might be a little over gunned for skimmers and roach.

I put it to the test on Ash lake at Todber Manor and although I didn’t catch loads (not the rods fault!), my earlier concerns were unfounded and I only pulled out of one roach all day, landing several skimmers to around a pound. If I’m totally honest obviously this rod would be more at home catching carp and the Allrounder or even the Light Carp would have been more suited for silvers.
