As we head into May, another Bank Holiday weekend means lots of fishing with four matches lined up, starting with a trip up the M5 to the lovely Acorn Fishery. When the draw was announced I was near the back of the queue and pulled out 15 on the far side. It’s a great silvers peg but you’re up against it if somebody on the island decides to go for silvers and of course Paul ‘Castaway’ Faiers was on number 3 and would be able to pick up his post and milk which he now gets delivered!

As I was setting up there were loads of carp showing on the far bank so when the whistle went I kicked off down the middle after doing well on that line in the last match. Losing a foulhooked carp first chuck wasn’t ideal so I dropped in short and then promptly hooked (and landed) a carp there which wasn’t the best of starts! Down the middle I did manage three tench for around 4lb during the remainder of the first hour but was way off the pace required to do well.
Back on the long line, I began catching quite, lots of ide along with a nice 2lb tench and when that faded I had another good spell down the middle, more ide, a decent skimmer and several tench. Then with around two hours to go, it started chucking it down. I came in the top four line and caught steadily until the end although I was also hooking quite a few carp and at the all out, I had 63 fish on my clicker (8 tench, 4 skimmers, 50 ide and a roach).
When the scales got round to us, Bob G was leading with 177lb from peg 2 and Paul F was the top silvers with an excellent 52lb 1oz, I knew I didn’t have that but 43lb 9oz was still a lovely days fishing.
